Copy Editing

The copy edit is done on an early draft of the work. It is the job of the copy editor to clean up the text by correcting spelling mistakes, bad grammar, punctuation and factual errors. In some cases there may be structural editing required.

The work sent for copy editing –  whether in hard copy form, computer disk or email –  should be double spaced and justified left.

In the form of a hard copy manuscript, corrections are made using traditional editor's marks written in blue ink above the line. In the case of manuscripts sent on the computer, changes can be made directly to the body of the text.

Proofreading

Once the material has been typeset in the form it will take when printed, the page proofs are edited by a proofreader.

As well as performing the same corrections as a copy editor, the proofreader is looking for consistancy in font, heading sizes, correct captioning of illustrations and other aspects of the layout.

Unlike the copy edit, marks are made in red and placed in the margins of the work.
